Free Teaching Tools Website

I am not a teacher. I am a computer programmer. My wife is a teacher. My mom is a teacher. My sister is a teacher. Several other relatives and in-laws are teachers.

In order to help my wife with her class activities I created a website: http://www.teaching-toolbox.com

It was initially for her use only, but I thought it would be a good idea to share it. Anyone can now use it.

I'd like your help. I mainly need feedback. I want the site to be a great, free tool for teachers. In order to do that, I need to know what teachers want and what you need. Are the tools on the site genuinely useful? Would you use them? What other tools would make your day-to-day life as a teacher easier? Any input would be greatly appreciated (and possibly rewarded with new tools you describe).

I'm currently considering adding two new tools. The first is an easy, fast teacher homepage where you could tell a bit about yourself, list the classes you teach, and keep current assignments and announcements posted. The second is a computer take-home test where you would enter questions and multiple choice answers as well as a list of students. The students could then take the test (or homework - however you set it up) and the grading would be done automatically for you.

    Would you find these useful?

    Thanks for your time,
    Warren

Looks like it's off to a good start!

Warren, I'm not a teacher, I'm a technologist with a strong interest in creating online educational resources. I haven't tried all of the tools you've posted but I did try the Word Search tool. Very nice!

As your site is built right now there is a barrier of entry in that visitors have to actually use a tool in order to experience it. Perhaps offering links to pre-created tools might help others see the benefits of each tool. In this regard, even thumbnail images would allow visitors to preview a tool without investing too much time.

Anyway... just some quick feedback. I know personally, how time consuming it is to create what you've done, so I applaud your efforts!

Thanks for the feedback. It's very helpful to see through a fresh set of eyes. After giving the site a rest for a while and looking at it again I see some things I didn't before. I agree with your assessment. The individual tools work well but need explanation and visual walkthroughs and possibly better navigation. I've also uncovered a few small errors that need to be cinched up. Hopefully I can find some time soon to improve the site. Thanks so much for your response. It really helps me out to get other people's ideas and opinions - especially someone with your experience and background.
