I especially like putting the offending student in the tube instead. I started humming the Jetsons theme song when I read that.
I had an odd thought the other day, about office referrals. What I'd like is one of those vacuum system things- like at the bank. You put the referral in a capsule, put the capsule in the tube, and whoosh- the referral goes to the office before the student gets there. No hunting down a student assistant to carry it up there. No bothering a colleague for the same reason. Of course, it also occurred to me afterward that, with modern technology we could just pull up a form, fill in the blanks, and hit *send* and it would print out on a teletype...... Of course, when I broached the vacuum system to a colleague, he suggested putting the offending student in the tube instead....

Some kind of e-mail or other intranet form would be more efficient, but not half as cool.
How about homing pigeons or trained rats? Maybe a little electric train running through the walls that you can set things on.
I'm too busy today. I'll procrastinate tomorrow
The problem with any good idea is that there
1) has to be someone there to read (or get) the message
2) if there is someone there to read it - they have to actually be tuned in to READ it
School offices are crazy places.

Well, wouldn't the same person who talked to the student be able to check the system when s/he saw that they were there? I have a hard time seeing teachers sending students to the office without anyone being available at the other end...
Thinking about sending the offender through the tube reminded me of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory--I think it was Verucca Salt that got stuck in the tube?? That was a crazy image! Paired with some of my ruffians that I would have loved to stick in a tube and hit "send" on today! Field day is a headache![]()

Hehe...I'd forgotten about the Jetsons.... No, I was thinking that there ought to be a way to refer someone to the office that didn't waste as much of the teacher's time. For example, if I currently want to send someone to the office, I tell them to go there, and then I send the referral slip with a student (if I have any around I trust) or a colleague who has planning, or if the first two are not available, I have to wait and take it myself. I also usually have to make a phone call to let them know the student is coming. Since I tend to look at technology as useful, I thought I'd bounce around a couple of ways to make this process take a couple of minutes.

I think that sending an email is the most useful way - except if I'm in the middle of a powerpoint, I'd have to stop the ppt or if the office help doesn't read it - like I said earlier offices are crazy places.
At our school, a phone call seems to be the most efficient method with a follow up email. (If someone picks up the phone)
I'd still like to send the offender through the tube though.

Well, of course, if that that tube could transport the actual student, it would have to know *where* to make the delivery to the administrator tending those matters. Sometimes, things happen without our being able to understand or explain.
Those tubes really are great things. After all, they deliver Milk Bones along with cash while going through the drive-thru at the bank with the dog.

Email was my first thought, but it depends which administrator is handling the student you sent. Within the intranet concept many systems have a shared network for teachers which can only be accessed when logged in as a faculty member. If you place the form in this folder, it could be accessed by any administrator talking to the perpetrator.
I too like the idea of putting the student IN THE TUBE!!!
