Today it was K's birthday and I play a silly guessing game with the birthday child where I try to guess his/her age. I say things like "Are you 43?" The child laughs and says "no" waiting for me to guess again. All morning I ask: 17? no 104? no etc etc. I ask other teachers who guess silly numbers and it's quite fun for the children (and for me). I asked her how old she was yesterday and counted on and said confusedly "you're 5? You can't be 5, V is 5." Many of the children chorus together "I'm 5, I'm 5". I pretend to be amazed that so many children can be five at the same time and wonder if on my birthday in November I'll be 5 too. The birthday child today said very matter-of-factly and almost rolling her eyes, "you can't be 5. You're a hundred."
If you can't be kind, at least be vague.

Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results. -- John Dewey

Heh heh. It's so weird to think that your first birthday of the year occurs as our year is wrapping up
This year was really weird for me. For the FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE I found someone - online - who had the same b'day as me, then another person, so that's two... oh no - MORE! In my homeroom there are ANOTHER TWO students who also share my b'day! FOUR people, all found in one year. Phenomenal!
I taught my pupils how to say their age in English and it was "I am 4", but one with English-as a native language said "I am almost 5" and said it many times - poor, she didn't do it to spoil the class but was sincere.

That is so cute! I love when a kid has a birthday in primary school, because that usually means cupcakes or some other homemade treat for everyone!
Very cute indeed! I bet the kids just love that. 104! Seriously I bet they get a huge kick out of that! We sing birthday songs (as a class) but nothing like yours.
