The chocolate syrup idea doesn't really appeal to me. I just imagine how messy the classroom is going to be. I'm sure a lot of parents would be unhappy with chocolate syrup as well. These days you have to be so careful about what you give the kids to eat in class.

I am not sure how the parents would feel about the chocolate syrup idea, but I know the kids would love it. I teach kindergartedn and pre-school so we don't really have a lot of spelling at the beginning of the year. We do more alphabet recognition instead. I have letters that have been cut out of different materials like sand paper, felt, and other unique materials that we practice tracing our fingers over to teach writing skills.

I agree with RTB, too messy, if it gets on clothes for example, angry parents. Also, some kids are allergic. If they are very allergic to dairy, it may even cause a reaction just through the skin. Many kids with allergies don't think about it or say anything. Unfortunately, many parents are the same.

Has anyone tried shaving cream on the desks? The kids have fun playing with it and practicing writing their letters, AND your classroom desks get scrubbed clean!

I have done the shaving cream letters before. I am currently teaching my kids letters at home and we have textured letters. Some are sandpaper, some are felt, some are plastic, and so on. The kids like to trace their fingers over the different textures to "write" their letters.

I like the chocolate idea, and we have aprons so the kids shouldn't get too messy. I have done the shaving cream letters on the desks before, and you are right it's a great way to clean the desks too!
