    help for gifted child

Kindergarten is tough-some come in writing stories and some can't write all the letters in their names. I have a child that finishes work in 5 min that others may not finish after 30 min. Any ideas for how I can challenege this child and keep her from getting bored?

What can she do? Set up some independent projects, 15-20 minutes worth at a time, that she can do to enhance her strengths.

What are her relative weaknesses? Set up some activities to give her extra practice.

She can work on these while everyone else is finishing the assigned task.

Does she really need to do what the other kids are doing? If she's already mastered it, don't make her do it at all; jump right to the "extras."

I'm a parent of a gifted kid (and former teacher), I just wanted to say to make sure you don't just end up giving the kid extra work all the time as the "reward" for doing such a good job... some kids lose motivation if they do all this great work and then just get more work in return, then they eventually just quit doing a good job in the first place.

Just be sure to balance it with something FUN for doing such a great job so they will keep it up!

If it's just one or two kids who regularly have lots of extra time (and you have the time to do this), maybe you can ask them what kinds of things they are interested in & find some little enrichment activities around that (bugs, boats, Beethoven, whatever). Even if it's Spongebob, they can make a booklet/notebook all about Spongebobology or whatever.

It can be simple things too, like drawing/art, reading, audio books, etc.

You probably already know this, but it's just something I have experienced
