Looking for Web Sites for 2nd grade students to help them research "heros". I've found lots of sites on heros but nothing on their reading level.
Thanks in advance!

Lydia,
I have what you are looking for: Famous Americans at
http://www.educationalsynthesis.org/famamer
.... compiled to meet the State Objectives (SOLs) for Virginia for Kindergarten, First, and Second grade, and some for 3rd, 4th and 5th, but they aren't complete yet ...
Just finished a special website for the first link under Kindergarten, Pocahontas ... it has a readable/printable summary (for primary grades)with pictures, an illustrated biography (for elementary grades) , a narrated Flash slide show including a text version of the slide show (for braille printers), a time line (middle school up), a web bibliography (elementary up), an online picture quiz for little ones, an online multiple choice quiz for older kids, and a printable version of the two quizzes combined. Oh, and a page with a few possible "assignments" listed.
Let me know if this includes heroes you are expected to teach?

Do you mean sites that kids can access and use independently, or with adult assistance? Here are a few for kids; they would probably still need support:

And a few current events showcasing contemporary heroes:

Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results. -- John Dewey
The site can be used by primary students if an adult gets them to the Famous Americans site at http://www.educationalsynthesis.org/famamer ... Opening pages include a summary of about five or so lines. The Pocahontas site http://www.educationalsynthesis.org/famamer/Pocahontas is a new format and links both a Flash presentation and a Flash picture quiz that can be used within minimal direction by an adult even by Kindergartners.
Check it out and see for yourself.
