    I like compare/contrast topics:

    fear/hope, ballet slippers/cowboy boots, etc..

I like personification topics: You are a school locker. Give a graduation speech for a classroom of school supplies.

    I like "What if...." topics.

I like to give quotes and take responses.

I like to play a musical selection or show a poster/picture/painting, and let them respond.

Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results. -- John Dewey

There is a guy named jim who posts here who has a journal topic of the day based on the date. Check his out! I often use his, maybe just adjusting it a bit for my third graders.
