    Any LIBRARIANS out there????

:? I am looking for a book, but I don't know the title or author. It is about a man who changes from a seal to a human in order to try to gain the love of a woman. He puts her into a trance. It is a chapter book and I think it's fairly old. The creatures who make this transition are called selkies, but I don't know if that is in the title. Any idea what the book title might be, who the author is, or where I could search on the Internet??? Please help!

    Hi bsobol,

There are many web sites devoted to mythology; a search on google.com for selkies could give you some interesting and, hopefully, useful results. To get started, here are some web addresses that might help.

    Good luck!

Does an old elementary school library tech count? I never finished the MA in library science, so I can't call myself a librarian. I'm a few classes short. I got my teaching credential instead.

I'm still looking; as a matter of fact, I checked in this morning specifically for this request. I'm reading through a stack of books, considering them for my classroom library, and one of them happened to be about a male silkie. It doesn't fit the rest, though. It's new, and it isn't a love story. Don't give up!

Ok, bsobol, this is what I've got so far:

I searched Amazon. Limited, but quick & easy. Then I searched the L.A. public library catalog and the NY public library catalog. There were a couple of titles, but the descriptions were not informative enough and I couldn't find a better description. So I went to the library of congress to search. They have titles, no blurbs or summaries. So I took the titles that I hadn't seen before back to Amazon looking for a good summary, and voila!

A Stranger Came Ashore by Mollie Hunter

There were plenty more to choose from; this seemed to fall close to what you were trying to find. It was published in 1975.

If it is not the correct title, now you know how to continue the process!

    any librarians out there

1959 novel by Rosalie Fry, Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry

This is the book I think you are asking about. It was later made into a movie, "The Secret of Roan Inish."
I have seen the movie and it was entertaining.

    Hope this helps.
