I still remember a few of the classics I read in high school. Julius Ceaser and Lord of the Flies comes to mind. Also Beowolf in the old English Language. I can still remember and recite the first few lines of that one. We do our children an injustice when we don't teach these classics. They need to know what our literary foundation is and where it came from. Should we forget our past, our future is very dim.

I ran into a senior the other day who was filling out his college applications for some really stringent universities in our state. He had taken the top program his high school offered, but he remarked that he had never had any Shakespeare and asked me who Chaucer was. Needless to say, I was dumbfounded.
