    English Phd detriment?

    Hi guys,

I just got my phd in English and I want to teach in high school. I'm thinking of getting certified next year. Do you think my phd will be a detriment in finding a job? Will certification help?

    Thanks
    Julie

Wherever you teach, you'll need to be certified by the state. Other districts may allow emergency certification, where you teach uncertified with the understanding that you will be certified in a certain amount of time. I cannot see how a PhD could possibly be used against you. Get certified and get a glowing recommendation from your master teacher and building principal.

Certification in NC is required. The sad thing is that our state doesn't pay more for a phD than a Master's. There are two phDs teaching in our English department. They are useful for making the school look better on the "No Child Left Behind" criteria, so I wouldn't worry about being overqualified.
