    A Novel Idea

Has anyone read the Terry Bain book You are a Dog? It gives a dog's eye view of the world, and I got to thinking in the shower this morning that this would be a great novel to teach.

If it were me, I'd ask students what they think a dog's life is like, then we'd read the book, then have them compare what they said to Bain's guesstimation of it, then they could write a paper from another animal's view. Interesting, no?
Common sense is not so common.

That reminds me of another book that is written from the point of view of an animal-'Diary of a worm'- I used it with a class and it was a success! The kids loved to compare the worm's world with their own life. I told them they should create their own 'worm adventure'. This was used in a grade four class and it was a good introduction to the study of 'point of view'.

That sounds like an excellent idea to me. I love teaching about points of view because there are so many. We write from the perspectives of ordinary objects, such as a laptop or picture frame. We write from the perspective of imaginary items and from body parts of the characters. It makes for some interesting creative writing.

This type of divergent thinking is an excellent way to teach critical thinking skills in young people. It's also great for helping them understand point of view later on in school.

I really like this idea! I think this may be something I add into my lesson plans for next year. I really like the idea of having the students write what they think life would be like as the animal, and then reading the book about it. You could have some interesting discussions about what they originally wrote after the book was completed too.

I love it! It sounds like my kids will really love it. I'll give it a try, thanks for sharing
