    School Newspapers

Along with my Language Arts curriculum, I am also teaching a journalism elective, which includes creating a school newspaper. I am only in my second year of teaching, and this is my first year to try this, so I am not sure exactly what to do. Can anyone give me suggestions of what is contained in their school's paper? My students are middle schoolers (7th and 8th).
:!: Even more helpful would be to send me a copy of your school's newspaper so that I could show it to my students and give them a physical model of what we are striving toward (I would be happy to give my school's address!). Thanks so much for any help you can give me!!

I'm also teaching a newspaper course next semester. I bought a textbook called "High School Journalism" by Homer L. Hall; I'll probably use it as a guide/resource as I teach (there is no journalism textbook for students in my school). Also, try looking at past issues of the school newspaper, if there is one. My school newspaper is more of a newsletter - photocopied on 8x10 sheets with no color - rather than an actual newspaper. Anyway, good luck with your course!

    Reply to school newspapers

    Hi Stef,

I am new to this forum, so I have only just read your request for information. Since the school year has already begun, I hope that you have been able to find some useful information.

If you are still looking for good resources, try jteacher.com. It has a lot of useful information, including printable handouts and lesson plans.

I also suggest that you use actual newspapers as examples. For example, if you are teaching leads, show your students a sampling of leads from a recent issue of the nearest metro newspaper.

You might want to consider joining the Journalism Education Association (JEA) and/or your state's J-teacher organization.

Will they be actually making the newspaper too?

What program are you anticipating to use for design etc?
