Zacchaeus has now entered his 14th year on this earth. He has surpassed Bananas by about 7 weeks. We gave away Bananas' toys when he was 12 as he no longer wanted to play. Zacchaeus greeted me with his squeaky dumbbell from Menards' of Tweetie Pie and Sylvester. Then he raced to bring me his pink, four-squeakered animal toy. All this before I got my coffee and he got his breakfast. He is still going strong.

Daughter mentions the need to see him, as "it might be her last time seeing him." I doubt that, but it does show the difficulties of not having him with her now that she is on her own. She once thought that if she called him "her" dog, he just might be able to go with her. She found out how stubborn I am. He is the family dog. She ventured from the family to live her own life, and rightly so. He stays with us for however long he remains on this earth. Floppy, left ear, lumpy fatty tumors and all.

In the meantime, squeak, squeak, bark, voom!

Happy Birthday Zacchaeus!! Do you want to play with me and my rope? I like to play tug of war and I can play for a long time. I'm only 6. I hope you get some doggie cake today for your birthday.

Gene . . . the 12 year old fatty-tumored doggie . . . says---

Gene still loves to play and run . . . only not so fast or so long anymore. He really surprised me the other day by jumping up onto the 3-foot high brick wall around the porch. I had no idea he could still do that.

I need to have my eyes re-examined. When I first read this, I thought you said "breast" i.e. "the old floppy, lumpy breast is 14 today."

Yikes!

I was in the shower and Zacchaeus nosed his way into the bathroom and sat on the rug by the mirror. Usually he goes outside, partakes in some water and food, sniffs through the house to take inventory of where his herd is, and then curls up on the couch. As I gathered my coffee-to-go and got my stuff to the back door, he was barking and deciding if he should grab a toy to play. I should have taken the time to look into his eyes. I would have seen the "bolt look" in his eyes. Instead, I wheeled my crate through the door with him right on heels, or wheels, of it. Through the door and to his light pole at the end of our driveway.

Only I did not see the slim, old thing. He was very sly. Hubby made an obstacle course on the sidewalk to the driveway. He has rototilled that soil to plant his garden flowers along there. He placed down the fibrous plastic that he will plant the flowers through, but will keep the weeds down. That is covered with a tarp and weighted down with the stone liners. So on the sidewalk is the remaining clumps of mud and the bark covering. This meant that I had to lift by crate and purse and step precariously along the edge without falling into the dirt.

I do believe had I seen the naughty, dumb dog, that he would have been smiling royally. I got glimpse of his white fur along the garage door as I was wheeling my crate to the car. Too late. He first lifted his leg at pole and then went onto the next pole two houses down. Of course, he did not come when I called. He can't even here me come into the house anymore or our doorbell, so he won't hear me when I command him to give up his freedom.

At the end of the block, he finally sees me and stands in submission. I pick him up to carry him back to the house and scold him. Bad dog. Very bad dog. Turns out that the police officer is parked at our house to catch speeders on the highway. 8O I scolded the beast more and told him that that man could take him for a ride in the car to a place he would not want to be.

Looks like I will need to give him the Sit/Stay commands while going out the door again now that summer is here.

Zacchaeus is still here with his spurts of energy. He has taken to sleeping under the bed as well as curling up with me. 8O There must be a space there where he can wedge in and sleep.

Pooch can still keep up with me, or I can keep up with him, for a 30 minute walk. He doesn't hear us come in or the doorbell ring anymore, but he may answer the occasional TV commercial doorbell.

Happy Birthday, silly dog!

Young Spooky sends his best regards, although he himself is merely in single digits yet.

Happy Birthday to Zacchaeus! My childhood dog, Taffy, a cocker, died when I went to college. She was 18. Animals add so much to our lives.

With my dad gone, I'm getting my home back to where it was, slowly but surely, after 8 years. When I finish with carpets and closets, finding a dog is on my list.

Well, the beast is here to celebrate his 17th birthday! Who would have thought? When he was 15, the vet said he was about 95-100 years old in people years. His hearing is worse than hubby's, but then, we have not spent thousands on those new electronic hearing aids like hubby has. So hubby says hello when I get home, and then I say hello. Then hubby shouts hello again to arouse the dog, and I shout hello back. We put a little step stool by the bed so he has a means of jumping up. He has learned to step on that and then the bed. His nose works just fine. He was able to jump right up on my recliner when I was eating my Italian Sausage to steal that sausage and leave me my bun. Isn't he thoughtful?
