Came home today from a two day trip and found my cockatiel dead. It was bloody and battered and the prime suspect is my love bird. I left, Friday, not remembering to close the door of the room where the cockatiel is and forgotting to put the love bird back in its cage. The love bird has always been very aggressive, but I never dreamed she would do this. She is skilled at break into and out of cages and has broken into the cockatiel cage several times. She has never hurt him though. He has steadfastly refused to have anything to do with her...

Not sure how to feel or what to do....

That is so sad Billy-Bob. Sometimes females can get really aggressive. I remember one female bird in my aivery who killed my entire clutch of babies - in every nest box ( I had 6 going, and all had babies) It was a horrible bloody massacre. For some reason that bird had problems getting mates, and rather than do what the other "lonely" birds did and just join in wiht the chick raising, she chose to kill the babies.
It is a female bird thing to do with jealousy. Is your lovebird of an age where she is thinking about mating and perhaps wants a 'friend'? Do you want to have that kind of relationship happening. Lovebirds are usually really social creatures and enjoy hanging out wth other lovebirds... maybe she was upset that the cockateil was a different species?

I am so sad that your bird died. Its always so sad to loose a pet - particularly in such a horrible and violent way.
Rest assured it is nothing to do with how you raised the birds - just spring season getting their tail feathers ina twitch.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your bird. They sure have personalities and are pretty creatures.
