Grad school anyone?

Is anyone interested in (or in the process of) searching and applying for graduate school -- masters or doctorate?

I'd be interested in a doctoral degree ... maybe ...

But my primary focus right now is to finish the current school year with my 4th graders.

After that I'll need to find a new job for next year ... and assuming I like my new position - sure - I'd be interested.

    Why?

LOL Do you mean why did I ask? I thought we might start a discussion about costs, programs, financing, traditional vs distance learning, dissertation topics, -- whatever anyone has questions about :-)

    Cool!

I can print out and save all of this information.

I'll also reference the thread for the folk who visit the New Teachers' Place.

What would you like to start with?

    What about time and feasibility?

Is an on-line course any less time intensive than a traditional course? And what about lectures and discussion groups ... and access to graduate libraries? How does an on-line course compensate for this?

I am currently attending graduate school online. I teach in an entry level graduate professional program and to me, my program is much more demanding. You truly have to be a self-directed learner to be successful in the particular structure I am attending. Tish

    grad schools

Let's explore the possiblities. First, where have you looked already for grad programs? In what area of education do you want to get your degree? What degree are looking for -- masters, phd, edd, etc.? What kind of time commitment can you make to grad school? Are you prepared to spend 15-20 hours a week for each semester course you take (PLUS travel time and sitting in class time if you're not doing a distance learning program)? Would you be interested in Distance Learning degrees? How close do you live to a university that offers education graduate degrees?

Knowing some background and seeing what information one already has makes it a lot easier to discuss the issues involved when teachers take on grad school on top of full time classroom teaching.

    Grad School Anone

I am just trying to find something that works within my schedule. I visit all the high schools and middle schools in the state. Including the U.P. That means that I am in travel status for about 3,000 miles a month.

I think that I will check into some online possibilities like Tish suggested in her e-mail. It's nice to kick these things around. I work in the Bureau of Student Financial Assistance. If you are interested in locating funding sources I would like to suggest our Web Site at http://www.Mi-Studentaid.org.

    Graduate School

    Hi Jennifer,

What I like about the particular structure where I am attending, is the flexibility. The instructor posts a question twice a week and the class is to comment on the question within a certain time period. We are also required to comment on the postings of at least one of our classmates. There is ususally a paper due at the end of the quarter. Some classes have asssigments in addition to the postings. I don't have to be in the classroom at a certain time, if I log in at 0100 (yes a.m.) that's fine. The most difficult part is keeping myself on task. Tish

    Grad School Anyone - Tish

    Tish,

Thanks so much for the information. Are you enrolled in this course through our Virtual University? Or is this with a college or university. Is the program accredited?

I really like the part where you can log on at any time because I am usually stuck in some hotel room somewhere across the state.

Thanks for the information. I really appreciate it.
