What should I be looking for?

I am in the third quarter of my junior year of high school. College-search crunch time is fast approaching. I've browsed web sites, requested info, sorted through the gobs of college mail I've been getting, talked to teachers and friends and family.... And as I do so, well, I'm not quite sure how teaching should factor in to my search.

I know I want to teach. I'd like to teach language arts or foreign language, preferably Spanish. Eventually, I'd like to be a school administrator -- vice principal or something.

So... do I have to major in English or Spanish in order to teach it? Should I even considering majoring in education? ... Which schools are known for teacher education? ... I'm also interested in journalism and political science. How on earth can these fit in with teaching? ....

    I feel overwhelmed already.

    My two cents:

Don't major in Education unless you double major. You can teach without a major in Education, but you can't do much except teach with one.

If you do want to study Education (or a number of other things!), Columbia has an excellent program.

Depends.....my alma mater offered degree tracks based on what sort of teacher you wished to become...for example....my undergrad degree is history and secondary education- because I wished to be a high school history teacher. They offered degrees in elementary education, middle grades social studies, and a plethora of others- basically, you had content area, psychology, and education classes. You can check them out at

This will require at least an Master's degree in a lot of states- plan to go to school for a few years....
