All schools do it differently.
At ours, we have an A honor roll and an A/B honor roll.
Some schools use letter grades, some use GPA, and some have more than one list like we do.
Teachers, What is the criteria used to determine honor roll status in a public school? Is this decided by the individual schools, state or other standards? Thanks in advance.

We don't have a real honor roll like in American schools, but kids recognized at our last schoolwide teacher meeting were the kid with all As, the kid who won a citywide championship in chess and the kid with perfect attendance. The fourth kid who is talented in certain subject will get a prize from a private fund (founded by mother of a deceased former teacher).Originally Posted by pammie
At our school, we have A- Honor Roll and AB- Honor Roll. The kids receive a ribbon with their report cards for each marking period.
I was amused with the last set that I handed out. Several of the kids (who definately don't look the "nerd" part) proudly displayed their ribbons on their shirts/pants/belts. It gave me hope that some really do still care.
I've heard that four out of every three people have trouble with fractions.
Individual schools. In mine, we have 2 levels: 4.0 and 3.5 - 3.99.

Our school changed the honor roll criteria this year and parents/students were not notified of the changes which caused some confusion and complaints.
The principal asked me to be on a committee to review the honor rolll criteria and come up with some recommendations for changes if necessary. I am looking for some guidance in establishing a method of recognizing academically talented kids. Currently, 1rst honors in our school is straight A's--an A is 93% or above in all subjects. Does anyone know where I can find literature on this topic or a good internet source? I looked under our state board of ed and found nothing.
Thanks.
We do ours by and average of all grades. If all grades average out to above 93 it is high honors, but not all grades need to be above 93. (96 in one class would offset the 90 in another.)Originally Posted by pammie
I was looking for some resources to help develope criteria for a grade school honor roll. Having no luck finding anything.
Thanks.
I don't think there are any out there. I looked a few years ago when our system was under attack (and for good reason). Once we got our new attendance program the figuring of the GPA was much more straight forwar, like it should be. The other attendance program apparently used a very very strange formula. We have:
4.0 Superintendant's honor roll
3.5-3.9 Principal's honor roll
3.0-3.4 honor roll
I personally think we need to get rid of the bottom group.
I think the hardest thing is to get teachers to grade consistently. Our intermediate school has a teacher who puts most of his students on the honor roll. he does this so no student feels left out and everyone's self esteem is intact. When state tests roll around and the majority of his kids do not meet the standards he tells the parents how flawed the test is and they believe him. When next year rolls around his students' teachers have to explain to parents why they did not get honor roll. It is unpleasant. Trust me, most of those kids did not earn the honor roll grade.
Grr....I despise this conduct- it ruins education. Our intermediate school has a teacher who puts most of his students on the honor roll. he does this so no student feels left out and everyone's self esteem is intact.
