I'm new, but love to learn new things and get my day out...thanks for being around to listen
I had just gotten back from my first period classes foray into the wilds of the computer lab. I had told them to go in, sit down, and DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING!!! I had even told another teacher as I went down the hall that I had already picked out the one child who would not be able to use any computers at school, because he WOULD break the acceptable use policy. Honestly, I walked in the lab less than 1 minute before the first student got there and sat down. I had the directions on how they were to sign in. Of course, they all started to type in any old password to try to get in. Got them all to one of the 3 sites that I'm allowing them to use - no googling. Then I saw the one boy who I'd already selected as my sacrificial 8th grader. He was just about ready to hit enter after typing in a google search. I basically told him to get his hiney into the learning center (connected to lab) and use print sources. Granted this is my "low" class, but they should be able to follow directions. My other two classes went fairly well. Most of the kids abandoned the computers and headed for their print sources, because it was easier to find information in the books. Of course, that's exactly why I get them on the internet in the first place. Once they have some notes taken from print sources, they have a better idea of what they want to concentrate on. But, being 8th graders, you can't actually tell them that. Well, actually you can. They just don't hear you! Tomorrow's another day. Plus, it's a half day because of conferences. I may be checking in from school, because we only got about 8 responses from the 30 or more requests we sent out. Ah well, I have tons of papers to grade and stuff to get ready for next week. We have to stay until at least 8:00 tomorrow night if we want to leave at noon on Friday. Karen
