    The ultimate "low blow"

Think of one of the worst things that can happen to a male teacher. It happened to me, this week.Well...not solely to me, but I was one of the targets.

One of our boys had gotten himself into deep doo doo, gradewise. He was grasping at proverbial straws, looking for a way to cover himself or, at least a way to distract from the real problem. He made a series of allegatgions about all the teachers who had given him less than good grades. In my case, he alledged that I was a letch. I won't go into the painful details

The allegations were investigated, as they should have been and they were found "groundless."

    Nothing happened to the boy.

The enabling mother has pledged to get him counseling. Meantime it appears that it is okay to slander teachers.

I am livid. So are a lot of others!

As in, the little X@#! is still in your class? As in, no suspension? Not even ISS?

Perhaps it is time you engaged the services of an ambulance chaser. A defamation of character lawsuit against the parent for an amount equal to their net worth might in order (and I'd even tell the lawyer that he/she could keep everything gained in a settlement....) Perhaps all those falsely accused could even file a class-action suit....Sorry to hear this happened to you...unfortunately, that is the nature of the beast we have to deal with.

I've had this happen to a couple of male teacher friends of mine. I know I have a certain level of immunity, since I'm a woman, but I know that day is coming for us, too.

It sucks, sucks, sucks, billybob, and I wish there was some recourse or support I could offer....it's a dreadful position to have to try to defend.

I hope you have good support there, and the little jerks get what they deserve. The worst part is is that they do not understand nor care that they could ruin the rest of someone else's life.....

Thanks for your encouragement. This doth indeed suck.

johnboy, I have already called NCAE. I have informed my administrator that I plan to pursue legal action. At the very least, I plan to have a lawyer issue a letter of warning. Might take it farther than this.

Administration has supported me, johnboy. They investigated the whole thing, found there was not a shred of truth to anything said; administration has said they will testify on my behalf.

This kind of crazy behavior is becoming ever more common in our school zone. Maybe it is time to make a messy example of someone and perhaps some of these nutty mothers will back off.

    Am I angry. Durn right!

And no, the boy was not even given ISS. Admin is trying to cover their butt. They say the mother has promised to get the boy counseling.

A lot of help that will do us.

I am so sorry this happened to you.

My husband is a teacher also, and he is always extraordinarily cautious about how he may be perceived by kids. It seems that male teachers are more often the target of these kind of allegations than female.

Good for you for pursuing legal action. It should send a message to other yo-yos who think nothing of lying.

Glad to hear NCAE is on it....I often question myself about being a member of this organization, since I tend to be right of its leadership. Stories like yours remind me why I shell out that thirty bucks/month. Also glad to hear the admins are behind you, although truthfully, at the very least they should suspend the kid for disrespect to the staff members. I applaud your decision to take it as far as you are going- somebody should make an example of this sort of thing. Hang tough!

So sorry this happened to you. Glad that there will be no further repercussions for you to suffer. I have seen too many times when groundless accusations ruin a teacher's life.
I do think their should be some consequences for the little sh*t. I hope your lawyer can convince the school of it also.

That sucks. It happened to a friend of mone but he was not as lucky as you. He was fired before the investigation was finished and the girl admitted she lied. Told all of her friends she did and one went to the teacher and told him and his lawyer. He won his lawsuit against the school, but left the profession, his marriage crumbled and he, in truth, is a much different and bitter man. He gave the girl a failing grade. Two years ago a girl was taken out of my class and all the principal would say was it was to protect my career that the girl was over heard plotting to get me fired after I had her suspended for bring a knife to school.

We are definately in a profession where being male makes us very vulnerable. And with these allegations we are definately guilty until proven innocent.

I have to work several more years to qualify for retirement bennies, but I have begun to wonder if it is worth the risk.

I've heard some horror stories too, ones much worse than mine. This kind of thing is NOT all that uncommon.

I've got a call in to our local NEA rep; this is my second call. No answer yet and I have begun to wonder what I pay my dues for.

I am not a vengeful person and do not usually even discuss litigation, but this situation almost demands it.

The boy was overheard, today, bragging to friends that nothing has been done to him.

A lot of people here are livid.

There is this unreal assumption that laws broken in school carry no il-effects. Many schools are turning this around when it comes to drugs (not around here though. You smoke pot in class you get three days off) but for other things like this nothing is done. In the real world, making false accusations of this kind is illegal.

Of course nothing happened to the kid. Why would it? I hope you do go after him. If nothing else it will make a point.
