    Valium Drip

Can I get a Valium drip? How about Valium sprays for the classrooms?

Our 7th graders are going down fast . . . and they're taking us all with them.

Last year they were Hell on Wheels. By the end of the year there were better. We were actually impressed with them this year as 7th graders.

    Now . . . well . . . they're backsliding, and FAST.

It's like one day they were OK and the next they were very much NOT ok.

They're surly & rude. No rules apply to them. Deadlines mean nothing.

They're throwing things, pushing, hitting, shoving, stealing, making noises, griping, lying, and generally being hard to live with.

Today the assistant principal flipped out on them in the cafeteria. They were absolutely out of control. They had silent lunch today, and they've got a WHOLE list of things that are going to change tomorrow. I just got finished making my Walter Cronkite powerpoint . . . you know, a "that's the way it is" presentation for them.

They've lost lockers, hallway time, and unsupervised restroom breaks.

They're not going to be happy come tomorrorw morning.

I'd offer my class again but I don't think I could handle an entire class--maybe you could send them one at a time? Maybe we could do a trade-- my new boy who has never heard the word No before with one of your surly grade 7s.

Maybe we should design that . . . a "behavior issue exchange program".

It might not fix their issues, but it will give us some variety in our issues.

I think it's spring fever. Our kids get this way as soon as the weather warms up and the days get longer. They immediately start itching for summer, and many decide that the school year ends with spring break.

    I'll offer up my 8th period - they're GT (gabby & talkative).
This brings to mind one of my 8th grade boys, who showed up with a small group of students to "visit" me at lunch. I didn't lock the door, because I had a student doing detention with me.

I asked him why, since he hated my class so much, he would want to spend MORE time with me at lunch. His reply?

"Well, to be honest, you're really pretty nice outside of class. It's just during class, when you put on that scary, evil, "I will eat you for dinner if you talk" face. I mean, if you just didn't expect us to do any work, everything would be fine. My whole purpose in life is to sit and talk, you know."

I've always wanted to experiment with colored lights in the classroom.

Notice the colors and lights in a McDonald's. When was the last time you felt relaxed in a McDonalds? There are bright colors (red, yellow, white) along with bright lights. They don't want you to sit and relax. They want to you to eat and leave, or just take food and leave and eat it somewhere else.

Compare that to a fancy restaurant. There are no bright colors. The colors are browns, dark greens, and dull reds. The lights are dim. They want you to stay and order the next course.

I'd like to augment the florescent lights in a classroom with banks of red, green, and blue lights controlled by three dimmer switches. By turning different lights on and off I can make whatever color I want, thus affecting the mood of the students.

In the morning or when kids are nodding off or losing interest I'd make the lights slightly yellow. When the students get unruly or fidgety I'd change the lights to blue or green.

Sounds like a bright kid. I am not kidding. The way this sentence was worded reflects insight and a self-critique. It is also nicely stated.

When we had our section of the school built in 2000, our classroom lights were flexible. I can have 1 bulb, 2 bulbs, or three lit at the same time. It is nice to have that choice. Sometimes all three just seem to be blaring. If I have a migraine, I only have one bulb power our room. Sweet.

Heck, that'd be easy to set up with colored lights! Just put a gel over each one. With all three lit up the Red, Green, Blue gels would combine to make white light. With one or two on it would be another color like yellow or blue.

My 7th graders got reminded by the principal today. They were reminded that anyone who earns an Unacceptable citizenship grade this week would be inelegible for the dance this Friday. That also applies to those with a U on their progress reports.

So after class I had a few students begging, pleading, threatening, offering to get me to change their grade so they can go to the dance. One kid opened his wallet and tried to hand me a $50 bill if I would just change his grade. Anyone have a kid try to bribe you with real money?
