Approx. income details for overseas (student) Teacher, etc.

    Hi there,

This is my first post - I am in Australia, 30 years old and have just completed (about 2 months ago) the second of my four year University Teaching degree.

We (my Wife and I) are looking at all possibilities once I graduate (in 2007), including moving overseas to teach.

Likely, we would consider the UK or Canada. If I am lucky enough to have some English or Canadian-based teachers reading this post, I would really appreciate any thoughts you may have on this topic.

Are there legitimate chances of work in (we call them Primary Schools) Elementary Schools in the UK or Canada for Australian graduates?

As a (rough) guide, could you please indicate approximate income figures for full-time work, based on me being a "new" straight out of college Teacher?

From past experience (anyone reading), is it even possible to land a job teaching in another country straight out of College?

Sorry for the questions, but I have so many things I want to ask and this could be my best chance of answers.

Kind regards and thanks in advance for any replies.

    Adam in Australia

Lots of people in from NZ have ended up teaching overseas straight from school - I shouldn't think people from Ozzie should have much difficulty either.

Just out of interest, is pay in Ozzie based on the state you're in? What do you reckon is the starting wage for a secondary school teacher is your state?

    Good luck with teaching!

Good Lord don't come to Canada.....

Sorry, but it's so. Maybe in Alberta, and possibly in Ontario, but we are all in a state of declining enrollment, especially here in the West Coast. The only caveat is that there are ALWAYS lots of jobs in the North (I mean-- WAY in the North--like Nunavut and the Yukon) The pay up ther is far better than we make here....but for good reason.

IF you were able to land a job here, the starting salary is about 40 000CAD with a BEd. You cannot assume that your credentials are good here either-- you would need to check that out individually with EACH province (I am in BC). Don't even consider Quebec or much of New Brunswick unless you are fluent in French.

Have I depressed you enough? Sorry.....but if I CAN help in any other way, let me know

I am in Alberta and we just went through a rash of hiring for primary grades here (kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd) because school boards are supposed to get their average class size significantly lower than it has been in the past in those grades which resulted in a lot of teacher hiring. I've worked in both British Columbia and Alberta. I would have had to take some more courses to get a permanent certificate in BC and given that things are brighter in Alberta, I moved back home . Wages range from district to district here. Our starting wage for someone with a 4-year degree is currently about 43 000 and you max out after 10 years of experience at about 74 000. Contract negotiations are pretty much ongoing so there is still room for increases after that but you are always in the "max" category.

If you are planning to come to Canada, I suggest checking the provincial government websites and finding out what it would take to get certified to teach in those provinces (as it varies from one province to another) and then going from there. People who are trained elsewhere do end up teaching in Canada as long as they qualify for a teaching certificate.
