    creative consequences for tardies

    Hi,

Does anyone have any ideas for dealing with students that come in tardy? Showing up late to class is a chronic problem at my school...students roam the halls 5 minutes or more after every tardy bell has rung. With that said, referrals don't really have much of an effect.

Are there any techniques that you have found useful for getting students to come on time to class?

If it helps, I am teaching 9th grade.

    Thanks

    Eric

At our school, we have a great system. It's called "Tardy Round-Up".

When the tardy bell rings, the teachers all close their doors and they are locked. Without a pass, the students are not permitted in the room.

They must go to a designated location on-campus to get a tardy slip. The tardies are logged in a computer and the consequences begin after the SECOND tardy in one six weeks. This would be the second tardy FROM ANY CLASS.

After the second and third one, they get a D-hall. After the fourth and fifth, a couple days in ISS, and I think the sixth one is an automatic suspension.

Students are EAGER to get to class on time to avoid those consequences.
I've heard that four out of every three people have trouble with fractions.

At my school, a letter is sent home after five tardies from any class.

I give 2 points a day for attendance; if a student is tardy without a pass, they only receive 1 point.

I don't let tardies bother me too much as long as the students are not causing a distraction when they enter.

At my school we record any people who come in after the roll/bell as "L" for late. THen that gets recorded upstairs. In the spirit of "restorative justice" there are no consequences for being late to class.
I make students who are late into my class come up and explain to me why they are late. Inevitably they have been seeing a teacher - and school rules dictate that they need a note from that teacher before being admitted to class, so I send them on a treasure hunt for that teacher - who is never around and can never get them a note... and they just end up missing more and more of my class. Thankfully I haven't got in trouble for this yet as each time it is bought up with me I just open up the school rules book adn point out the rule.
Discipline in my school is so slack I just dont get angry or anything about tardies now. Its just more rubbish that happens within the classroom to distract from learning. In some ways it is easier to send them on thier treasure hunt because otherwise they disturb the class more.

I haven't seen this done since becoming a teacher, but when I was in a high school there was a teacher that made you sing "I'm a little teapot" in front of the class if you were late without a pass.

Trudi has the late people write their names on the board and then they have to stay in five minutes next time thier class is before a break.
I tried this... but the night school people kept wiping the names off the board. Grr.
