    ASCD Conference

    David,

Are you going to be at the ASCD conference in San Antonio next month? I plan to be there and was wondering about weather, after hour activities, etc. I'm from Ohio. I have only flown once (to Boston to the ASCD conference there last year) and am as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Any suggestions?

    Dianndra,

No, I won't be at the conference for supervision and curriculum development. I mean gracious heavens ... in my district teachers have no input into curriculum. We do what we're told . The high muckity mucks from Central Office send their administrators, curriculum coordinators, and department chairs to meetings like these ... while the rank and file prep for the TAAS tests.

    Hmmmm ... and you're nervous?

    Why?

Are you intimidated by conferences? Do you feel intellectually inferior to the people you'll be meeting? Or do you just hate flying?

And you're as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs?

David peered at his monitor with sudden suspicion.

Are you SURE that you're from Ohio? You SOUND like a southerner.

Truly though - I've been to many conferences and unless you're presenting there's no reason to be nervous. Think of this as a working vacation.

San Antonio is a beautiful city and chances are you'll be downtown.

So take a walk along the canal. Buy a Mexican scarf. Have a meal at an outdoor cafe and listen to the Mexican music.

Enjoy the weather - which is much nicer right now than the weather you're having in Ohio.

    RELAX! You'll be fine.

    Truly!

And if you have some time - go see the Alamo!

And go see the Texas museum of culture! It has some really neat displays from Texas history.

I must confess, David, I am from southern Ohio -- right on the Ohio River, about 10 minutes from Kentucky. My mother is a half breed -- half Kentuckian/half Ohioan. I'm not afraid of the conference - even though I have no sense of direction when I go to new places. It's the flying that gives me the jitters. When I went to the ASCD conference in Boston, our plane cabin filled with black smoke -- even the stewardess was nervous by the time we landed.

I am a member of our school district's curriculum council. This is why I was asked to attend this conference. With the idea of integrating technology being so popular right now, they wanted my input since I'm the technology teacher. I enjoy going to conferences if they're well organized. I hate to wait in line to register. I also dislike having to sit wall-to-wall in sessions. I like to hear classroom teachers present so I can hear it "from the horse's mouth", so to speak.

I've never been to Texas -- I'd like to be able to see more than the walls of the convention center. We own a horse farm and train horses for western pleasure riding. We also break/train horses for trail riding. But enough of that -- that's not what this forum is for.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm looking forward to visiting your state.

    My State? My goodness ...

Er ... did I mention that there was a $10,000 surcharge for visiting David of Houston's state? It's a one time only pay the guy in the pirate suit (unofficial) bill. I'd like that in small non-sequential denominations please.

    Heh-heh-heh

But truly - go for a stroll along the river walk. There will more than likely be a Mexican band playing someplace. Have some good Mexican food. Relax and enjoy. San Antonio is a nice place.

My very favorite hotel is the Marriot Riverwalk. It's right near the convention center and the service is impeccable.

    David
