DIBELS and Fox in a Box

Is anyone out there giving the DIBELS assessment screening and/or Fox in a Box??

My school district just implemented these two assessments this year and there are few people who seem to know how to do either one. There has been little training for our reading leaders. They don't really understand. And the trickle-down effect is that the teachers don't really understand either. The only advice we are given is to watch the training video (which we all know is in a very unrealistic setting) and to read through the manual very carefully and make notes.

Shouldn't there be some more advice and more formal training? This is my second year teaching, so everything is new to me anyways.... but everyone is struggling and confused.

If anyone can offer advice for either of these assessments, please share.

    Thank you,
    Jamie Winingham

    DIBELS

Well, I am the 4th grade chairperson for our schools SIP committee. (Student Intervention Program) It's a lot of work. During our meeting this morning we were presented for the first time with the DIBELS program. After the meeting I felt like I needed a drink! I took a valium instead  and went to speak with our literacy specialist. No one trained us, they just threw this huge assessment packet into our laps. The lit specialist agreed that there needs to be an in-service or formal training for the program. After I sat down with her for 20 minutes, the program didn't really sound all that bad. We are going to have a specialist administer the tests as we watch so we can become familiar them. I suggest you ask your administration team to do the same for you.

    Dibels

We use DIBELS but there are people at our school that were trained to administer it. Insist on the full training for those administering it so the results will be valid.
