Graduated with an El. Ed. degree now what?

    Hello

I graduated from a college in Illinois with a bachelors in Elementary Education. I then flew out to the Washington DC area to teach. Not finding an elementary job immediately, I was hired as a special education teacher. After struggling with the new terms and curriculum for the first few months, I found my job teaching special ed extremely gratifying.

In the future I plan to get my masters degree in education, but the experiences of being a teacher in special ed are priceless. I believe that a teacher is better prepared for the typical classroom (which now has 1-3 special needs students) when he/she has been in a special ed classroom. What do you think :?:

If you are teaching social studies at the secondary level, like I am, some Spec Ed training should be required. I had only a little myself- because a thoughtful instructor included it. The reason is that they will be kept in a spec ed class for their math and English, but they'll get mainstreamed into history, civics, etc. I personally think the smaller separate setting is better for them, because they really can't get the individual attention in my class of 33 "regular" students that would really help, and that they are accustomed to.

The state of Maryland now requires at least an INTRO to special ed class to be certified at any level.
