Welcome! What country are you in? Use whatever procedures you need to create an atmosphere you can teach in and the students can learn. What is the opinion of the administrator?
Hi. I am a new teacher in my second year of teaching. I teach English overseas. I am writing because I am a bit dismayed I learned about Harry Wong when I was in college and use his methods in my teaching. I started teaching a 9th grade class which I took over for another teacher. I used his procedures (the 1,2,3 to get the class quet, signing up to go to the bathroom--6 times out a month (I only teach the class 1 hour a day), and I do the behavior plans like he suggested in the books) However, parents are complaining because they think it is too babyish and that setting rules (even though I am using procedures) is too strict. Does anyone use Harry Wong in High School? Anyone use him overseas? Kids in this country are used to a lack of rules and maybe I came off a little strict. I am a little dismayed though because it is what I am used to and now I have to change my teaching style. Any ides? Any advice? Thanks! It's nice to meet all of you and be on this board!![]()

Hi. The parents pay part of the tuition of the school, so the administrator
says I have to go with whatever the parents say. In fact the parents have
been known to fire teachers and have a lot of say with what goes on in the
school. Do you limit the bathroom for students? I am understanding and lenient-I just couldn't take students always leaving class and asking me
in the middle of my lesson. They get breaks every 35-40 minutes. It's a rich population. I don't know if tha tmatters.
If the parents are running the school and you have an administrator that permits it, I guess there is not much you can do.
I teach middle school. I allow student to use the restroom during work time - no more than one at a time.

and it will always be the parents of the bad children too. I teach in a public high school, and my limitation is 2 emergency uses per 9 weeks grading period, and only 1 at a time. (This is not an absolute limitation, I do relent a bit towards the end of the second 9 weeks.) I teach 9th graders- or maybe a better term would be I have them in the classroom- I'm not too sure they learn much sometimes... I use some of Wong's things (I'm not real big on following it completely- it seems a little too robotic even for me). I don't know where you are teaching but it doesn't sound too good. Good luck with it anyhow. If the parents are running the school

while harry wong has some strong ideas it is only a suggestion. you need to take his ideas and make them work for your classroom. i do tend to think that he has too many rules and procedures and that can create a stifling environment for the students. i generally start the year by having the students come up with rules for the classroom (with some obvious guiding). i always send out a contract to both the students and the parents during the first week that has a syllabus attached and the class rules and procedures. this way any issues are dealt with early on and you have their signature on file (not like that always means anything). as for the bathroom...my policy is if you need to go you need to go. students sign out, take the bathroom pass and go as they need to. they are not allowed to disrupt the class in so doing. only one person is out of the room at a time. if the pass is out you wait. if i notice that someone is abusing the privelege (going every day/taking extended time) i schedule a talk with them.
