    Is High School okay?

For teaching? I am getting ready to go to a high school to teach Spanish while the main teacher is on maternity leave. I shared with many on this board about my first year (last year) of teaching, but I am hoping that the second time around will be better. Any advice for a soon-to-be interim high school Spanish teacher? Thank You.

Hmmmmm ... high school is a bit out of my ballpark. I'm an elementary teacher so all I can offer is some really general advice.

    1) Find and familarize yourself with the district curriculum for Spanish.

    2) Get a copy of the faculty handbook to learn about school rules, attendance procedures, grading policies etc.

    3) DON'T GOSSIP. There is always an undercurrent of school politics that is going on and as a new intermim teacher you don't want to be seen as "aligning" yourself with one side or another.

    4) Be firm - fair - and consistent with the enforcement of your expectations.

Best wishes to you in your new job,

    David

Were you teaching at a Middle school last? Hate to break it to you, but high school is not all THAT different! I love it though...the kids are getting real personalities and opinions...You might find that you can talk about more of the cultural aspects of Spanish with them than younger kids, if your curriculum allows.

They aso some with a lot more baggage, I think. Added to all the normal teenage woes is teen pregnancy, drug abuse, parental abuse, job issues, boyfriend abuse, date rape and all of the other problems of modern society that seem to get DUMPED on our high school kids!

I really do like it though--don't let me turn you off! Be sure to post how it goes when you start, I would like to find out your observations on teaching in high school.
