Ideas for First-Day Activities (High School)

I'm starting my first year on August 29, and I'll be teaching high school English. Does anyone have ideas on a quick, fun activity I can do with my students? Our periods are shortened considerably on the first day, and I have to issue textbooks and go over the syllabus, but I'd like to do something that doesn't bore them to tears. I have a "getting to know you" questionnaire I'll pass out at the end, but I'd like something else as well. I'm not interested in activities where the kids get to know each other, as I'm teaching at a fairly small rural school and all the kids already know each other.

I know it sounds childish to have kids use colored markers to create things, but high school kids love that stuff just as much as little kids do. Does anyone have an idea where I could have them create something quick and small?

I think the best method to do, is something which boosts their confidence for the year. Something like a role-play which they have to perform in front of the whole class. Whatever it is, try and make it something where the kids have to interact with each other.
