Southwest a good place for teaching jobs?

I want to go to the Southwest to teach for at least a few years.

Where is the place that teachers are in the most demand? I've heard conflicting advice but the Southwest, Florida, very rural, and very urban often are mentioned.

I'm from the mid-west (Chicago) and hate the weather. I really want to move to a big city in the Southwest , ie California, Nevada, or Arizona, maybe...just maybe would consider Texas.

However, I know Social Studies jobs are hard to get, so what are my chances of getting a decent job. I want to teach in a suburb (hopefully).

I'm going to be a senior @ Indiana Univ. what are my chances when I get out?

    Southwest

I'm not sure what you think of Texas but the Rio Grande Valley is always looking for teachers. The pay scale is pretty good and the cost of living is not near as much as it is in Chicago. The weather is pretty great to; the summers can be hot, but the winters are very mild, almost tropical. Some of the cities to look at in the valley area are Brownsville, Harlingen, McAllen. Of course the more urban areas are Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas. Of these I would say that Houston and San Antonio/Austin have the mildest winters. All have some very good school districts with exceptional pay (at least I think so). Hope this helps some! Houston and Dallas area schools hire just about year round. You probably would have a good chance of getting a job at the upper level in one of these cities.

    Thanks for the reply Lori.

Anyone else have an opinion? I may be looking more towards California, but I'm not counting Texas out of the picture, I just wish had taken Spanish instead of French in HS, might have been more useful.
