    Underhanded little bleeps!

I am very mad with my 7th form.

All term I have had to coax/plead/beg them to work. We got very little work done. The concepts were "too hard miss" to learn, so I worked around it and made posters and mobiles etc to explain the ideas and get them straight in their head. It was "too long miss" to read the page of writing to themselves, so I read it to them and broke up the informatoin. Basically I learnt everything for them and regurgitated it for a second time to such a degree that I thought it was at a junior level (these guys are at their final year of high school) I even spent two periods (ie two hours) working with them about the test they were about to sit.

Then in the last week of term I got called up by the Beginning Teacher, Teacher AND my Head of Faculty (on separate occasions) to deal with "THE LETTER".

An anonymous student in my 7th form had sent a letter to the prinipal complaining about my teaching style and the fact that I hadn't given them any notes ALL TERM and that all they had done with off topic mucking around stuff. They felt I hadn't done any prep at all regarding their exam.

Ooh. I was livid. Not only did they not see fit to approach me about these issues, but to go straight to the princpal! Grr.

I showed the Beginning Teacher, Teacher all the notes I had given them and all that stuff. She agreed with me that the letter was no good.

I was then called to the HOF who showed me... the same letter! It turned out the principal had sent it to all staff concerned with this (expect me of course, why would I want a copy of THE LETTER? Grr) My HOF told me waht REALLY happened.

Apparently one of the girls in my class had come up to her with a letter, with my name spelt wrong (It's only three letters.... AND it's still on the top of the whiteboard from the first day of schooL! C'mon!!!) and signed anonymous with some complaints about the (lack of) notes they had been given. She told the girl to write it out properly, sign it and give it back to her. And also asked that the girl go see me first rather than just do a letter. That was the last my HOF heard of it and turned it out of her mind assuming that the girl and I had sorted it. Next thing, my HOF gets a letter from the principal!

I can't bleieve that they would be so ungrateful about my notes and so underhanded. I now know who that girl is and I know what her work habits are and as far as I can figure, she doesn't want to be in my class (since she does no work) and since she failed her assignment she is looking for someone to blame.

    Grr.
I am really mad. It's a week later and I am still mad.

Was there anything more I could do to be more "open" to students so they could approach me with issues like this rather than running straight to the top (bypassing all levels on the way that they were aware of)

    Sigh.

You can't please them all and you should not try.

Let it role, and stop thinking about it. If no consequences came out of it then treat it as over.

Now, if you want a little satisfaction get a copy of the signed letter. Slip it to the girl and quietly tell her you hope she will put the same effort into getting her work finished in class. And say it matter-of-factly.

I've done it and I figure it let's the child know two things. 1-You know what they did and it does not mean anything to you. and 2-you still care about the work she does and you expect more effort from her since she proved she can do somethng if she puts her mind to it.

I feel for your situation. However, I am going to be forward and offer my opinion. If my memory serves me 7th form students are 17 or 18 year olds that are planning on going to college or beyond. In my honest opinion, and please take no offense for none is intended, you coddled them too much. A statement such as ,"It is too long miss" or "It is too hard miss" is a cop out, an attempt to do nothing more then ease their workload - you played right into their hands.

If a student has not learned to deal with their studies by 7th form they most likely should not have made it that far. You teach the subject matter, if they need help you help them to LEARN the material, not spoon feed them. If they sink they sink, the ball is in their court.

Sorry if I stepped on anyone's toes, opposing viewpoints are welcome.

    Doctorate

Sorry, I know that "doctorates" in education are by and large rubber-stamp diplomas and titles churned out by diploma mills. I just want to know what "Dr.Daily" had a doctorate in, and hope that it is not in education.

I know quite a few people with doctorates in education that worked very hard for their degrees.

You seem to be a bit judgemental for someone who has less than 10 posts. How many of Dr. Daily's posts have you read?

I just want to know what it is in. I know of two "doctorates" in education who get livid when they are not adressed as "Doctor." And one of them wrote their dissertation on PLAYGROUNDS! Hard, VERY hard, to take seriously.

We need highly educated people in CONTENT AREAS - let doctorates teach in public schools, teaching math, science, history, english, et.al. Let them in without having to be "certified." We're in an education crisis, for God's sake. We don't need administrators with doctorates in "playground management" running schools..........................

    You asked...

Don't review the boards for a few days and look what takes place.

Mr. White, I will gladly answer a few of your questions.

As for being addressed as “Doctor”, I am just accustomed to the title and well it was an available username on this forum. In my school I am normally addressed as “Doctor”, not by choice, just the way it is.

As for my resume, well yes much to your dissatisfaction my Doctorate is in education, from a well known and accredited school. Additionally I hold a Masters in Education and Bachelors in Recreation with a minor in Physical Education. Much to your amazement my dissertation was not on “Playground Management”, as I did not know the subject was available, rather my dissertation “Curriculum Development in a New Educational System”, albeit not as flashy as “Playground Management”, seemed more suitable.

As for those that hold a Doctorate from being allowed to teach in a public school without being certified, well I feel for the students in any districts that would allow that. As for me, I hold a California Multi-Subject Credential as well as a Single Subject Credential in: Mathematics, Science, Physical Education, Social Studies, and Government. I also hold a California Administrative Credential. Would like to know my GPA, SAT Scores, and Greek Letter also ?

I am proud of my accomplishments and worked hard for every degree and honor I have. I taught for nearly 10 years in the public schools in San Diego and San Bernardino County and now I choose to work in a private school due to personal preferences. I am currently the Headmaster of a small private school in Southern California.

Sir, I do not know who you are, nor do I care. I found your comments insulting, uninformed, and disrespectful. You speak of an “Educational Crisis”, a statement I strongly agree with, what are you doing to help the education of our young people?

I apologize to everyone for this post, but the gentleman asked so I felt obligated to give him an answer.

You have nothing to apologize for. Mr. White, on the other hand owes you a big one.

Mr. WHite, hasty generalizations are a sign of extreme ignorance. Hopefully your post was made on a bad day, and you will make it right.
