An interesting question - but regretfully - this sounds like someone's homework assignment. Rather than answering the question for you, I will direct you to the following websites.

Who is Vygotsky, and what is/are his/her theories? Refresh my memory, please!

Vygotsky says that "learning is a necessary and universal aspect of the process of developing culturally organized, specifically human psychological function." According to Vygotsky, social interaction influences cognitive development.

So - if social interaction influences cognitive development - what happens when a child is ability grouped?

Personally Kelly - this really does sound like someone's homework assignment - so I am reluctant to comment further because I think people should be responsible for their own assignments. With this being said, I also think that if a person understands Vygotsky's theory and also understands the nature and function of ability grouping, this person should be able to come up with a reasonable answer.

Yup...with an idea of the theory, the connections jump right out!
