When to apply as a sub?

I'm in my last week of teaching kindergarteners during summer school, and my thoughts are turning more and more towards having a job for fall. To date, I have applied to about 75 jobs without an interview. I live in a fairly saturated teacher market, as I'm looking around a university town that draws a lot of alumni to settle. Unfortunately, moving this year for a job is not an option, as I have a fair number of things keeping me rooted here, and I will continue to hunt for a job until the beginning of the school year.

My question is, at this point I am still hoping to get a full time teaching position at a school within an hour from where I am living right now. At the same time, I am seeing opportunities for substitute teachers for fall cropping up. If I do not secure a full time job, I am planning on subbing. Should I be applying for substitute positions at this point, knowing that I would not follow through if I obtain a full time position? Or would it be better to wait until a time nearer the beginning of the school year?

I'm a bit torn. I feel like obtaining a subbing position at this point would almost be like admitting defeat, and planning to not have a full time teaching position. Are districts generally flexible about releasing subs who find full time jobs?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I believe any admin would understand if you took a full time position after agreeing to sub. It really depends on the contractual obligation of accepting the sub position. No contract, no obligation. Getting a job is frustrating at best. If in the same position I would keep trying to find a full time position, but apply for sub positions too.

Subbing is great experience on your resume

I subbed for a couple of years while I was working on my certification. Most districts are always in need of reliable subs. I applied to my first district halfway through the school year. I worked in several schools at one time, but eventually pared it down to one, where I developed a good reputation.

A year later, recommendations from the principal and AP where I subbed helped me to get my first full time teaching position.

When I applied for a subbing job in my district, they knew I was looking for a full-time position. They didn't care. The majority of the time they expect that of their subs.

My subbing led directly to a full-time subbing position in my area, and to a full-time teaching position the following year. Subbing is a great way to get your name out there and let schools see your work first hand.

Thanks for all of the advice! I've filled out my application for the districts posting sub openings, and I'll keep looking for a full time position in the meantime.

Re: When to apply as a sub?

I'm struggling with a similar decision at the moment. I'd wanted to go back to school for my second degree for years but always insisted I couldn't afford to go back. Finally, I am enrolled and fortunately for me, all of my liberal arts credits transfered so all I have to take is the education courses and math content (going back for secondary ed: math). I've been at a job I hate for the past couple of years but the money is good. DH knows I am miserable at this job and has been encouraging me to just leave it, focus on my classes, and sub to get my foot in the door at a school so by the time I'm certified I may have made good connections and be better established within one of the local schools. I keep justifying staying at the job I hate because of the money, but I suspect DH is right...that it's time to make the transistion.

Here the subs don't have a contract. They work when they want. Also, I'd say half or more are teachers waiting for a job opening. The district knows this.
