    Working at Home

How much time do you spend working at home to get ready for the next day? This is my first year and I work until 8 p.m. easily.

These days I think it averages out to about thirty minutes a day at home, or less. I would rather get up and go in early where possible, or stay late at school. It does get easier to leave work at work as you gain both experience and a stock of materials.

It will be nice when I get to that point! I figure next year will be a lot easier though, since I have the same preps. Here's hoping, anyway.

Nichole, I'm in my second year and yes, it does get much easier. I still work at home, but it's no longer every night and usually it's only for an hour or so.

I've had years where I worked four, five and six hours a day at home after I had already worked before and after school. With teaching, you do whatever it is you need to get done, no matter how long it takes. It was easier when we weren't required to turn in lesson plans every week. Those are a waste of time for experienced teachers who don't need them in the first place.

I try to get everything done at school before I go home. Doesn't always work though and yes NicholeH, it does get easier after the first year. Just hang in there and keep your lesson plan book for next year. Most of your prep is already done and grading papers can be done by an assistant if you have one.

It would be wonderful to have an assistant! This is my third year and I've never had one but I would love it. I agree with the others, hang on. The first year is so tough that I don't think it's fair to even evaluate how much you like the job.
