how can I make a reliable "invisible ink"?

This is actually something I'm going to do in my Reading group (fifth grade), but I want to know how to make an easy, reliable, invisible ink. I've tried it with the lemon juice and also cornstarch/water, revealed with iodine- and nothing has worked. I'm sure it's because I haven't done it right. Can someone who's done this advise me?

FWIW: The kids are writing spy messages based on a noted Revolutionary War spy; I'd like to have them do a special message using invisible ink for an intriguing element to the lesson.

    Thanks,
    BJ
