Teaching Gambling ... ?

I have been thinking of adding a few gambling games such as Poker and Blackjack to my website ... but not using real money, of course!

I do not wish to encourage gambling, but give students the ideas of probability, chance etc, and help train them in making intelligent decisions in an uncertain environment ("You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em, Know when to walk away...").

But with so many sleazy online casinos I would not like the "taint" of gambling. But yet again, our kids should be prepared for their life.

Any ideas on how this subject could best be approached, if at all?

One administrator reprimanded me for teaching the kids poker and blackjack for the reasons you mention. The next administrator not only encouraged it she dealt a few hands. There seems to be a fine line.

You might do it but not call it gambling, or poker, call it games of chace or probability games. Then list the games by name, without any mention of the word poker.

I think it's a great idea, but it could get you in trouble. If I were you, I'd ask my administrators what they think before proceeding. If they approve, go for it! The kids will love it.

Thanks for the opinions. What if the betting were excluded? But that is part of the fun - the risk.

Maybe Blackjack could be acceptable, if the contest was just how many games you can win. And it would at least teach them to make judgements on when to "stand".

I could have a dry dissertation on the probabilities of certain poker hands, but without some game playing it would be a waste of time. So ... don't teach Poker, they can learn that by losing money when they grow up 8O

If you are betting match sticks or some kind of math manipulative like ones blocks why not. It all gets picked up and turned in anyway right. Since it is on a website the no money is changing hands. Like I said though, it would be a thin line to walk. You would need serious support from the admin.

Teaching Gambling

If I were you, I would use the T. V. show "Deal or No Deal" as the basis for my web site. The contestants on this show certainly could use some education on probability!
You could link to the game at

http://www.nbc.com/Deal_or_No_Deal/game/flash.shtml

or write your own version of a the game.

In teaching, you have to take the opinions of a lot of different groups into account. If one person or group objects to the contents of your website, you may have a problem. Pick your battles!

teaching gambling...

Mathis fun; good point. I am sure that the site and the game are legally protected. I am not sure where we cross the line in using sites such as this.
I have used the site with high school students after discussing what a "life changing" amount of money would be. Inveriably, students would lose huge amounts of money in the early games, and would play more conservatively as they continued.
As I reviewed the game, I thought about potential questions raised by the attire of the young ladies associated with the show. This created no problems in my class, but others might experience different reactions. As I said before, you have to pick your battles!

Teaching Gambling

I dont think it will be nice idea to teach gambling and poker just to make them understand game of chance.

You can always use other methods like some animated dummy games where you work on guessing right numbers, puzzles etc etc. Even chess could be an excellent way of teaching game of chance, but gambling will not be the right idea

But chess is a game purely of skill, not of chance...
