    Technology for Math Learning

    Hello everyone,

I am a future teacher for secondary math. I am really interested to know how to integrate technology in classroom to facilitate learning. I really would like to know ebout using eletronic white boards, so I would be glad if any of you has somehting to share. I would also like to know about using software applications for math.

    rfrancis, welcome to teacher focus.

Now, is this an assignment for one of your classes? If it is (or even if it isn't), I think that it would be more appropriate for you do do some research about various technologies used in math education and ask questions about some or all of what you found out.

That would make it easier for us to dialogue.

    Thanks, Bitsy

This is not an assignment. The assignment that I have for one of my technology courses gave me the hint to enroll in a forum for teachers where I can get suggestions. Anyway, soon I will be teaching math. And I would like to see some examples of technology use in classroom. I have researched for technology resources a lot, but when it comes to the implementation it is different from what you see advertised out there.

I teach HS Math and I was lucky enough to have an electronic white board last year. Then I moved rooms over the summer, so I'm waiting on my new board to be installed.

For me, I converted my notes to powerpoint, used websites and applets to illustrate concepts, and used TI-Smartview software to emulate my TI83 calculator.

Overall, it replaced my traditional overhead plus gave me the added benefit of showing websites and applets.
HS Math.. currently Geometry and Statistics

I have used sites like wikipedia to introduce topics to student. Wikipedia is very user friendly and easy to read/understand. It often has pictures and graphs related to the topic as well as links to quality resources at the bottom. If you plan on using the web as part of a lession check it out.

    Hi rfrancis,

I make videos for my own lessons and put it on the website for students to recap the day's work. The software that I use is Camtaisa. It captures the screen and record my voice. It's quite a good software. I thought this is a good way to eliminate the need to repeat the lesson, especially for the absentees.

    Cheers

Whiteboards seem to be good when they are used to poll students on the correct answer. Although this requires some sort of interactive polling system.

I remember seeing a clip-on whiteboard at an event I attended and it worked fine. It clipped on to an ordinary whiteboard and projected from a laptop. It also had "touch board" capability.

I believe these are cheaper than ordinary whiteboards.

I think the idea of recording a class from a whiteboard is great. It really helps students when revising to have an archive of classes available.

Take a look at these sites on math applications

I have written a K-12 Top 12 Math Help websites list here:

Patty O'Flynn, a secondary math teacher, describes how she uses whiteboards and mathcasts here:

    Re: Technology for Math Learning

as far as software for math learning, the Geometer's Sketchpad is awesome if you're teaching geometry and you want to
    a) show interactive demonstrations of geometric relationships
    b) have your students explore geometric relationships on their own.

There is also an open source version of Sketchpad...can't remember its name. I've only used sketchpad.
