I teach first grade and I've used touch math with my students for several years. I've found it to be successful. I do not introduce addition and subtraction with the touch math. I introuce the touch math system only after I know the students understand the concept of adding and subtracting.
I see touch math method to prevent the over use of fingers. They will stop using them as they memorize the facts.
There is some controversy over touch math, but I've not found it to be a problem.
