    What to do?

There are several students that are capable of accomplishing the work assigned in class, but they are reluctant to do it because they are in the special education program. Although these students are slower they are capable of accomplishing. What can I do to boost their confidence and get them to accomplish what is in their reach?

Another problem that I am facing is that the student's IEP allows them to use their calculator to accomplish their math work. I encourage the student to try and do some of it without the calculator, but they won't even try because they know that under their IEP they are allowed to. How can I get them to try and accomplish the problem without the aid of the calculator, or do I have to wait until the IEP is reevaluated to encourage this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Thank you!!

    Hi Megan,

It sounds like you need the advice of a special eduation teacher. Have you tried posting this question in the special education forum? Dianndra is the moderator there - and she's really helpful.

This site is still relatively new. We don't have a moderator to oversee the math forum ... and as yet it seems as though we haven't attracted a lot of math teachers ... hence this particular forum is somewhat empty.

Hopefully that will change - but for now, I'd suggest that repost in special education.

    Best wishes,

    David

    I understand

I have had some of the same problems crop up with students. Although I do not agree with it, I have become resigned to the fact that many of the students (not just IEP) do not have the basic skills necessary for HS Math. In the elementary grades, I feel calc's should ONLY be used for exploring higher math content areas; however, in HS, with state requirements and end of instruction tests getting higher, I feel that students should be allowed appropriate technology as to not hold them back in learning the algebra or geometry skills. Please note the word appropriate... graphing calcs are not appropriate for Alg 1 as students should be learning HOW to graph.
