Summer! One of the three great reasons for teaching. I have plans to do a lot of NOTHING. I read 3-4 trashy books a week, write, work aimlessly on the computer, drive my kids around, hang out, and if there is any spare money; travel.
I am a big list-maker... my husband hates it, but it helps me stay organized. Yesterday I started my summer to-do list. Here's what's on it...
(I teach AP Stat)
1. Develop curriculum for the statistical software we use
2. Make Powerpoint lessons for my lectures to increase interest and allow me to move about the room
3. Make ACT/SAT warmups... many of my kids are taking the ACT/SAT, but haven't had Algebra or Geometry in a while... I want to help increase scores by refreshing their memory.. may even do these as PP rather than overhead...
What's on your summer to-do list?
HS Math.. currently Geometry and Statistics

We will have new textbooks, so becoming familiar with them is definitely on my list.
My youngest is going to college in the fall, soooo purchasing, packing, and moving . . .
Last summer, I refloored most of the house. Next summer -- I have to go back and get all the little things I missed!

What are my summer plans?
I plan to either relocate back to Oregon, move back to Austin where I've owned a house for several years, or join the Peace Corp Volunteers. (I have a large open list of things I'd like to do).
My father who is in his seventies wants to take me to China to the little village of Fou-Shek, "Floating Stone." Fou-Shek is my ancesteral village and my family can trace our genealogy back to the 12th century since the family genealogy has been recorded on the walls of the family shrine.
Since I may relocate to Portland, I'm hoping I'll be able to sign up for a culinary course at the Le Cordon Bleu Western Culinary Institute.
I need to revise a children's manuscript and start looking for a publisher.
I'd like to have a patio herb garden.
I'd like to meet a wonderful woman so I can make an effort to "settle down" the way my father wants me to. (He wants grandchildren in the worst possible way. I'm trying to convince him that puppies are an acceptable alternative).
I need to take the Praxis test - especially if I move to Oregon. Most states require the Praxis test but since graduating from Michigan back in 1982, I've managed to avoid having to take it.
I would like to take a voice class. I'm told I have a nice deep resonant voice. I refer to it as a "bathtub barritone." I'm sure my neighbors would simply refer to it as "noisy."
I've always wanted to take a ballroom dancing course. I'm fascinated by the Strauss waltzes and I like formal attire ... but I've been waiting to meet that wonderful woman. (They say that there's "someone for everyone." I'm starting to think that "someone" got mine by mistake).
I would like to lose weight but find that losing weight conflicts with my interest in gourmet cuisine.
I need to have the passenger side front parking light cover replaced. Someone ... we won't mention who ... smashed it while he was parking his car in his garage. (I still have a white smear on my bumper from where the car ran into the corner of the garage).
Things to do ... things to do ... I have so many things to do ... and so little time ...
Logging off from Houston,
David
We will begin to relandscape our yard. Last summer, my son did a landscaping project for his Eagle Project. We learned from a professional. She has drawn up plans for our yard. I'm so excited. We are going to do a little each spring and fall. I'm in no rush. We will live in this house until they take us to the nursing home or the funeral home.
I also hope to get staff development funds to go to Orlando for the First Grade Conference. I have my fingers crossed.
Between digging in the yard and planting shrubs and flowers, I will read, read, read, and go to the beach for a week.
Oh the excitement of summer.

Our summers are very busy. My oldest son just graduated from college with a degree in chemistry and has been substitute teaching to make extra money. He plans to take the education courses later on and hopefully get a teaching job next fall. His new girlfriend just finished her student teaching and is substituting as well. It's entertaining to listen to their stories -- I substituted my first year out of college, too, so I can understand their excitement/woes.
We own a horse barn where we trade, train, break, buy, and sell quarter horses. We show in western pleasure, and the show season for us begins tomorrow. This means every weekend we'll either be going to a show or riding on trail rides. We live near a state forest, and they have a horseman's camp set up for horseback riders. It's so relaxing to set up camp, kick back around a campfire, and visit with friends. I just purchased a Rocky Mountain gaited gelding and his ride is sooooo smooth. I can't wait to take him on the trails.
We also own a feed and supply store in a nearby village -- so we'll be busy with it during the weekdays. Never a dull moment around here.
We might take our pontoon boat out on the Ohio River a couple of times. Depends on whether we sell it or not. I've debated whether to put it up for sale this spring. We don't use it enough really. It's a 2000 model and has only been in the water about 4 times. What a waste. Someone else might get better use out of it.
We have 5 sons and one daughter -- they keep us pretty busy as well. The oldest (the substitute teacher) is 25 and the daughter is the youngest at 17. So you can imagine.
A person gets to thinking about summer, and it gives you "summer" fever. Is that possible? Or is "spring" the only fever you can get? hahahaha![]()

Our school is beginning earlier than ever this year. While many already start in August, our school traditionally begins in September. Now, however, we are beginning August 14. School this year gets out in June.
My plans include:
1. Teach summer school through July because I'm building a garage on my 76 year old home and I need money.
2. Watch fireworks--summer school lets out on the 3rd of July.
3. Counsel at a couple of camps.
4. Get ready for school to begin.
I might take a nap here and there, and I think I'll go to see a ball game too! One can hope...
