I just don't hear of that many people becoming math teachers in the first place. Teaching is a high turnover field and if the incoming "supply" is lower than it is for other subjects, a shortage will quickly become evident.
We have an enormous turnover rate in our area schools when it comes to math teachers. I understand they are in high demand, but it would be nice to have a math course taught by a math teacher instead of substitute teachers. Our students are losing out. Where are these teachers going? What are you hearing in your region when it comes to potential math teachers going elsewhere?

It takes a special person to want to teach math only. I think so long as there is a surplus of teachers willing and able to teach all subjects, math should get covered just fine.
Math is tough! Heck I would never want to be a Math teacher. I think that teachers stay away from Math because it's always changing. I swear you would have to learn a different way to teach the same subjects each year.
I teach middle school science, but I could see teaching math. I enjoy it quite a bit; it's just that I like science better. I suppose I could get certified in math as well if I ever need to change schools and increase my chances of getting hired.
At some of the schools I've been to it seems like math teachers have it pretty hard. Math is hard to teach and frustrated students really do take it out on the teacher. Many can't handle it. We also have had a high 'ditch' rate for math classes. The students really do miss out.
