    Interviewing for Spec Ed job

    Hi Everyone,

I am new to this site. Anyways, I just graduated and I have begun interviewing for jobs. I have spent most of my time dealing with teenagers with special needs. When I did my student teaching, it was at a junior high school and I was the inclusion teacher. Well, my name was sent out to this one school district and I had a principal call me about a position in an elementary school. The only problem is I have never worked in an elementary school, and I don't know the first thing about their inclusion classes. I really want a position at a middle school, but I don't want to close the door on this job just because I am a little scared. :? So, what is inclusion like in elementary? Can you point me to any resources to help alleviate my fears?

Well, I don't have any resources for you, but I just wanted to give you some encouragement. I am an elementary school teacher and I think that one of the most rewarding things is working with students with special needs and making a significant difference in their lives. I also think that perhaps you can make more of a difference with elementary students and see more results. Their youth makes them easier to "mold". However, I've never taught in a highschool, so I could be wrong. But, well, what I'm trying to say is that I think you should go for it. Take the challenge and try it out for a year. Maybe you'll end up loving it!
    Good Luck!

    Encouragement

I was a High School Special Education teacher (LD) for many years but when I moved to the hinterland of Ontario I took on a position as an Elementary teacher for kids with Emotional Disabilities (the label varies across borders). In any event, it was a great three years and cross-penel experience doesn't hurt. When a MS position opens up, and one will, you will look like quite a find to a Principal.

I moved back to High School and now am a Professor at a University in the US. That experience in the Elementary panel is something I will never regret having.
