    New to K-1 combo class

Hi, I'm new to the board. I would appreciate any advice /suggestions on teaching a combo k-1 classroom. My students will have learning disabilities and speech/auditory processing issues. All of my years of experience has been with preschool (3yrs) with mild-severe disabilities. I don't know where to begin. :? I need advice on classroom management, routines, first day stuff, ect. I'm very excited about this new challenge but I'm very scared. What about the actual academics 8O ?

    Thanks

I am only going into my second year of teaching so I'm sure others will have even more advice. But for my thoughts I teach in a residential school the age of my boys are 13-20 but their academic level ranges from prek to 2. I had the same thought as you where do the academics come in. You will be amazed as to all the lessons that can be taught in a day. Everything from being nice to friends, taking turns, waiting appropriately and "true" academics. My advice is to create a routine and even if it takes them the whole first month to get used to it. STICK TO IT!!!!, unless there are major issues with it. Take things slow don't try to over do it. And lastly keep the excitement level you feel now all school year. I know for me my boys can tell if I'm run down and thats when they take the most advantage of me. It's hard to keep going but I just keep telling myself that it helps them make it through another day in school. Oh and smile as much as possible!
