    RE: Touretes Disorder

Recieved this note about one of my students:

X has "Tourettes disorder ( shows as a nervous 'tic' - ie twitching, involuntary body movements, tapping, fidgeting etc.) This can be distracting but he cannot help it. Along with this, he can be quite irritating in class by attention seeking, being rude etc"

Have any of you taught students with this disorder? Apart from routine, what else can I do to help him fit into the learning environment of the class?

Currently X is sitting with Z (a girl) and they spend the whole period trying to make each other hyper. I have no room to move their seats without penalising another ("good") memeber of the class. It is nearing the point that I will move them thouhg.

This is a difficult class to manage because, apart from X I also have another 6 diagnosed ADHD students, and have been warned (by other teachers) that Z is thought to be ADHD too.

In terms of X, what tips/techniques can help him concentgrate on the school work and minimise the small distractions which become major events for him?

A buddy of mine in his early 20s has it. He twitches, he has the attention span of a gnat, and is often rude. I couldn't imagine having been his teacher, but he did at least get far enough along to flunk his first year of college. Don't have a clue about this though...good luck.

    Hee hee.

X responds quite well to me siting beside him and getting him to do the work, but then Z will immediately "undo" all the work I did calming him etc. GRR!

Can't wait for next week to be "mean" and move everyone in all my junior classes! Mwah hah hah hah
