    Special Education Teacher Anxiety Disorder

I am a first year teacher. I have a student who has an anxiety disorder. When he is unsure of himself he shuts down, starts breathing heavily and hits his head against the table. I have been sucessful getting him out of his attacks by redirecting his attention. But he still will not complete the task? Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I be more stren towards him? That seems to make it worse? Do I force him to finish what ever it was that set him off in the first place?????????[/b]

Do you notice any triggers? Does the same thing happen at home and have the parents found anything to be helpful?

It sounds like he's just so overwhelmed that he can't handle it - perhaps by showing him how to break big tasks into smaller tasks he can learn to cope...??? Maybe?
