    71%

71% of anything in education doesn't sound too impressive. However, where I teach it's a bloody miracle!

I just finished qualifying testing today for guys to go on and take the Pre-GED, and 71% of my students passed the test and qualified. From the impressed look of my supervisor to others who have been there for a long time, I (I say "I" loosley) evidently accomplished something rather unique this quarter. I had so many qualify I don't have enough room to test them all, so I have to do two groups. Sounds like the other teachers are lucky to get 20-25% to qualify, from what I can gather.

OK, that's some bragging involved there, but I only can accept less than 20% of the credit. Another teacher (the only other one who actually cares) and I work with each others students, so I credit her. I credit the computer lab coordinator, because our guys have some pretty good programs to work on. And the rest goes to the students themselved - mostly, because they do the work, take the tests, so on. I simply provide the "hard sell" of getting an education and being loyal to them every day giving 100% to teaching. There's nothing like shaking their hand and seeing their glowing faces when they achieve an accomplishment in learning.

Let me say this - the GED isn't rocket science, but it isn't as easy as one may think. I sometimes wonder how I'd do on it!

Anyway, nice to experience some success in an environment - and with people - some whom have never experienced any success in their lives.

Those folks are lucky to have you in their corner.

While I tend to agree with you that most student success is up to the student, still what you are doing to make them WANT to succeed, well, that's awesome!
