I feel your pain. I went through a whole school year with the big construction dumpsters out side my door while they replaced the entire roof. Everyone in the building had a week or two of severe noise I had a whole year.
Here is what I did. When thigs got real bad the class worked on a children's big book called the monster on the roof. They came up with the plot, and everything. When we got finished and the it was discovered the moster was really the construction workers we included a snapshot of all the construction workers. It made for some cool stuff until the roof leaked and destroyed it.
Them working on the book eased everyone's stress and sparked some cool conversations about how the sounds were affecting their writing. Each child was responsible for two pages in the book. Fully illustrated and correctly written. I think we did 12 drafts of the writing until the class felt it was done. well enough to put into the book. What started out as my worst year became one of the best.
Good luck.
Mark! What a fabulous response to a tough situation!

We were under construction for a couple of years, and they literally TORE THE PLACE APART. They worked downstairs, and I'm upstairs. Try having reading time with the jackhammer going under you. One day when they were hauling out the stuff, the bobcat driver HIT the side of the building, and books fell off my shelf!
Sometimes the dust was so bad you couldn't see down the hallway. And the FUMES!! Yuck!!!
There were funny moments, too. . . like when I would be talking over the noise and they'd stop working AND I'D BE TALKING REALLY LOUD.
We had the added bonus of having to move teachers in and out of classrooms all year long, AND they tore out the gym, AND the removed the cafeteria and we had to eat in the rooms the last month of the year.
I feel your pain.

I love the book idea Mark - and the fact that you're teaching "how to make lemonade out of lemons".
I am very noise sensitive myself, so Tac, I feel your pain!

Yeowch. And I think I got it bad when somebody's merely drilling a hole in the cinderblock wall in the next classroom...which happened the day before yesterday.... Doesn't anybody build anything during the summer anymore?
