    ARG! Books for Education Majors!

 I still do not see why they charge the education majors the most money in textbooks!! We will end up being paid the least, yet, we pay the most to do a profession that some are scared to do! Sorry..I'm venting...I just spent $299.84 on only -7- textbooks...and I still need 3 more. Also I'm just thinking that I have 2 more years...and even more expensive books coming..yea.

Hmmmm ... the culinary school I'm attending sells books in advance of each class that I have to take.

I spent $97.00 on one book - a paperback - on food sanitation. I still have something like 6-8 books that I still have to buy.

My Chef's tool kit with a complete set of German knives, a corkscrew, a peeler, a cooking thermometer etc. cost $700.

My culinary uniforms - 4 jackets and five trousers, a Chef's neck scarf, a skull cap, an apron, and towels cost nearly $400.

    (sigh)

On the brighter side - I got all the stuffed lamb I could eat today. The class ahead of us made TWENTY stuffed legs of lamb. Since school policy prohibits taking extra food home, the students shared their lamb with the rest of the school.

I'm going to have to hmmmmmmmm with David.

I remember my math books as being more expensive than any of my education books. AND my son's bio and chem books last semester totaled nearly $600 (ouch) -- only two of his five classes.

Unfortunately, college textbooks are expensive regardless of your specialty

Well, I try to spend as less as possible on books. *always goes to the used section* Also, my parents pay for my college and my books so I try to ease the price on them as much as possible. (thank goodness for scholarships!)
I was talking to one of my friends who works in the *only* bookstore on campus..she said that one person came in and spent around 600 bucks on just a couple of books. Ouch...

Oh...new expense..15 bucks for a background check before I can begin my observation hours...yea...

    Is this a Universal problem?

Textbooks are every parents nightmare - when their children is about to start High school. I have three kids - born "too far" apart ..............
Somehow there is an overall plan to change textbooks after one or two years. ERGO - I can not use "old " books. (They are filling up space at home- so far - two complete sets.) I can not sell the old books -
BUT WAIT - THERE IS MOORE !!! (Sounds like TV-shop)
very expensive calculators - (300$ ) has to be bought - because there is function added. (one that there is no need for.)
    Question?
is there a "fellowship of the educational material producers" that because of the monopoly they have - change books and editions every year in order to make more money ??
Here - at the beginning of every term the classifieds are flooded with :"Used books for sale!"
The people responsible - do they think profit or is it educational reasons alone for the rapid changes ???

The books I bought in 1970 - are still in use - (OK - so they are books that never will be affected by a new event- like history books that will have to get new chapters) My Latin dictionary is NOT in mint condition - but ...............
Still .... Outdated txtbooks - after just a few years -??? There's got to be a reason !
happy weekend - I got rid of the christmas-tree today !
    Peace

During my undergraduate and graduate days I found that I could sell my old textbooks back to some of the campus bookstores. I didn't get all of my money back of course - but at least I got something. I also bought USED textbooks from the same stores whenever I could.

I don't know whether this is something you can do at your college - but it's something to think about.

    Best wishes,

    David

THAT was how we made it through university - a long time ago !

I still feel that there is another reason than "new knowledge" or "for the benefit of the students" that is behind the system as it works today.

A relative of mine is selling textbooks - and his idea is that the publishers do not make money on older books - so they issue new ones almost every year.

Who is paying the price ? The students of course.
