Australian & NZealand people, pls help(about national pa

I am preparing a handout for my students about the
protected areas and national parks in countries other than
ours. So far I have Yellowstone as a representative of
North America (pine forest and prairie), Bialowieza (sp?)
for Poland/Belarus (deciduous oak forest), Coto Donana for
Spain (marshes and chapparal) and Serengeti/MasaiMara for
African savanna.
I would like to include a protected area in New Zealand
and/or one in Australia that is rich in various wildlife
and also has characteristic plants (southern beech or some
particularly common species of eucaliptus etc). I would
like to list 4-5 characteristic animals for each place;
and it would be helpful if the names of the localities are
easily pronounced if you are non-native. I remember that
one of the posters said she teaches in vicinity of or
within a koala reserve?
(few of the students watched a documentary on a Tasmanian
forest with spotted quolls (sp?) and devils, so that place
would definitively be a hit, too).

Heya. I am from NZ.
Last year I went to Fiordland. Here are some pictures:

Fiordland it a native reserve that is located at the bottom of the South Island. It is BEAUTIFUL.
NZ has a lot of native reserves. We can go walking through them whenever we like which is wonderful. Another one your students might like to learn about is National Park which is in the centre of the North Island. It contains Ruapehu (Roo-Ah-Pay-Who) and Ngarahoe (Nar-ah-Hoe-ee). Both active Volcanoes.

For some natural trees from The Waitakere Ranges:
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c52/x ... C01427.jpg (fern)

In terms of native species, we have Giant Land Snails (so so gross) and Weta (even ickier - imagine a hairy grass hopper the size of your hand eeew eeeew eeew) and of course birds. We have Kiwi (kee-wee) and Piwakawaka or Fantail (Pee-War-car-war-car) and Kereru or wood pigeon (key-rare-roo) Ruru or owl (roo-roo) and Morepork aptly named becuse its cry says "more pork". Tui (two-ee) sound beautiful as do the Bell Bird. Umm. what else is common animals. We also have hawks Kararea (Car-Rah-Ree-Ah) and Godwits (Kuaka Coo-Ah-Car) make their annual journey from Siberia to the area that I live in near the coromandel. Oh. Coramandel is anothe reserve.

ANy questions sing out.

Do you want me to send some brouchures?

Love Xyphir

Hi Xyphir,
Thank you very much!
And oops! I forgot that I posted it here so I didn't post any updates...
I already prepared and printed the handout by now, with help of KiwiChick poster on another board. I chose Fiordland as it is relatively easy to pronounce and includes both kiwi and takahe. I also included a sentence that said that there are numerous other birds that do not have names in Serbian so we use native names( nice way out). If kids keep insisting that they want to know the native names, I will give them your list (I have to go case by case with them as it is not very easy to determine beforehand what they are interested in and what they are not). It is great that you provided the pronunciation guide, and guess what? The way the names are written completely matches our phonetic reading!
