BECOMING A TEACHER AT AGE 48

Posted: 01-29-2004 09:11 AM Post subject: BECOMING A TEACHER AT AGE 48 ?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been considering going back to school to get a degree in elementary education ( I already have a bachelors degree in art) but it will take be about 2 1/2 years to finish and I would not be ready to teach until at least age 48. What are my chances of easily being hired at that age? I would not want to put the time and money into college unless I would surely be easily hired when I finished. Also how many years does one have to work in IL as a teacher to get retirement benefits? I would really appreciate any advise or help on these questions.

    Thank you!

When I was a twentysomething punk working on my BA degree in secondary ed there were several women in their early-mid 40s working on theirs in elementary and middle school ed- and I know at least one got a job. And I do know of some principals who prefer to hire more mature people on the grounds they have a greater aura of authority. So your chances are as good as anybody else's although like anything else, not guaranteed.

If the message applies to you think again.
