I had a student join my one of my classes last Friday near the end of the period. He had missed the first four and a half days due to flipping his schedule around this way and that until the couselors finally got it right. Since I have a quiz scheduled for tomorrow, he asked if he could come in for tutoring this afternoon to make sure that he understood everything (makes me like the kid already). While I was working with him this afternoon, he says, "You're not too bad a teacher." I 'bout fell out of my chair laughing and told him I thought he wasn't too bad a student either.
I also had a student who I taught as a freshman come in to my eigth period just before the period started. She asked if I had room in that class for her (obviously interested in a schedule change). I told her the roster was pretty full, but we'd make room for her. She said, "I'll stand if I have to!" I don't think I've ever received such an awesome compliment in my life!
Anyone else having start of the year gems like these?
I've heard that four out of every three people have trouble with fractions.

I've had several of mine ask me when we're going to start doing work in my class. :?
They've been working every day . . . but I guess as long as they don't know it's work, I'm good!

It is my dream to have this one day. I just started at a new school. I never wanted to be a math teacher, but here I am, and I am determined to do it well! I am still fresh meat though and I am working through a lot of trial and error. But I hope to be here soon. I have already gotten compliments by the parents as far as my expectations and procedures so hopefully I can get my teaching to the same level.Originally Posted by Mathematical Mary

To the person teaching math for the first time - I can feel what you are saying! I have to teach math for the first time ever, which I started a year ago at my job in the prison. Oddly enough, what do inmates struggle with most? Math and writing, just like on the streets (as we put it).
Anyhow, the ONLY math class I had was in college, 20 years ago, and that was what we called "Dumbass Math." Before that, I had it up to 9th grade in school. In short, I was screwed!
But, I taught myself with the help of fellow teachers and some good inmate tutors who made big money in accounting before coming to prison.
There have been some, and still are, embarassing moments but for what I have to teach, I'm about 90% there. I still need to get the geometry down. I actually like it. I can teach writing all day, and social studies and history are my majors.
So put the effort in and leave your ego out and you'll do fine.
